Batik in the Americas

Batik in the Americas developed in the 20th century, introduced through global cultural exchange and the movement of artists, educators, and craft practitioners. While the materials—cotton, wax, and a wide range of synthetic and natural dyes—were readily available, the technique was adopted primarily as a studio art form and a method of creative textile experimentation rather than a traditional craft with ancient roots.

Its development was shaped by art schools, community workshops, and the broader fiber arts movement, where batik became a way to explore colour, pattern, and layered resistance techniques. Over time, artists across North and South America adapted the process to local styles and themes, blending it with contemporary textile practice and individual artistic expression.
